Facebook Quiz 3

Answer to Quiz3: Human Sundial

Just as its name implies, the human sundial is a sundial involving the participation of human body. The instrument serves to tell the time according to the direction of our shadow cast under sun. The human sundial consists of two parts: A time tally marked with the numbers or titles of time; A month (or solar term) bar marked with month numbers or solar term titles.

When using the sundial, the user stands on the exact month (or solar term) of the time marked on the month (or solar term) bar; however, he should stick to the midline of the month (or solar term) bar, regardless of the month (or solar term) position of the time on the bar, which may be marked on the left or right.

Facebook Quiz 2

Answer to Quiz2: Kompyang(光餅)

Brief History: Kompyang(光餅) was named after Qi Jiguang, who invented it, taking the idea from Japanese onigiri. When Qi Jiguang led his troops into Fujian in 1562, the Japanese pirates, fearing his name, engaged mainly in guerrilla-style battles. Qi Jiguang noticed that the Japanese pirates could always trace where his troops camped because of the smoke that rose up to the sky when the soldiers prepared their meals. He found out the Japanese pirates had no such problem because they brought onigiri with them. So Qi Jiguang invented a kind of cake with a hole in the center so that they could be strung together to be conveniently carried along.

Later, to commemorate Qi Jiguang's victory against the pirate raiders, the cakes were named guang bing. If any one of you visit Sitiawan,Perak or Sibu, Kuching make sure you buy and try this, because its freakinlicious good... In Sitiawan they sell either plain or with pork.

MCSC Farewell and Installation 2011

On the 2nd of May 2011, MCSC held its annual Farewell and Installation Night. This event was held with the aim of showing appreciation to the 6th year senior students and the outgoing committee, and also to welcome the new board of committee members.

The event started at 4.00pm sharp, and began with the welcoming of the VIPs, the 6th year members. Each of them had a little ribbon pinned to their chests and were escorted to their seats.

Next up, there was a short video clip prepared by Hansley Liew, a clip to introduce the apparently-late emcees. Due to Blogger's strict limits on video upload size, the clip cannot be uploaded for viewing here. But the video is available for download at the following link :

The event proceeded on smoothly with a farewell speech by the outgoing president, Mr. Lee Jiann Woei, and then to the Installation part of the event. The Installation was planned by Mr. Chan Kok Xian and Mr. Daniel Tham Zen Kuang, and was nothing short of grandly impressive.

Following the Installation, we moved on to the performances. The first dance was led by Mr. Yap Teck Chong, and his team, comprising Mr. Chien Keat Leong, Mr. Chan Yon Quan, Mr. Ang Kientze, and new member Mr. Lee Jiann Woei, fondly known to all as the Wonder G*ys. The second dance was led by our current President Ms. Nicole Thang, her team consisting of Ms. Chia Li Peng, Ms. Shirley Chieng, Ms. Catherine Tan and Ms. Viphavadi Boon. The third dance was led by Ms. Loh Min Xin, and the members of her team are as follows : Mr. Yap Teck Chong, Mr. Soon Wei Lin and Ms. Tan Ee Lin. The performances were coordinated as to build up the atmosphere, and it peaked at the very final, where all the members from the first and second teams stormed the dance floor for a short 1 minute in a Step-Up like manner.

Now that we were done with the Installation part of the event, we moved on to the Farewell. The 6th years were presented with a teddy bear each clad in graduation robes, with badges bearing their names pinned onto their paws, and each holding a unique jigsaw piece designed by Ms. Heng Kheah Lynn's team.

Then it was time for the 6th years' debut. Their representative, Mr. Chai Chan Sin delivered his speech, a very meaningful one, in Chinese. And as a choir, led by Mr. Ng Wen Gen and Ms. Tan Li Fen, with Mr. Charles Chong on the guitar and Mr. Thien Wei Khiong at the keyboard, they gathered and sang to Emil Chau's song "朋友" (lit. "Friends"). Mr. Teng Kok Liang, the previous Media Director of MCSC, too, prepared a short slide show, depicting all the funny moments of their lives here in Volgograd.

Due to Blogger's strict limits on video size, once more, here's the link for download :

As the event slowly came to its end, a dance floor was set up in the hall, and almost all members participated in it. Smiles were abound, and the hall was rocked with the sounds of music, the members' laughter and shouts.

At 7pm, the event was ended, and members returned to their homes, stopping by at designated spots to pick up their dinner.

The 6th Year seniors. You will all be sorely missed.

And here, we have the the outgoing President's Farewell Speech, complete and unabridged :

Dear current 6th year members,
In a month time from today, you will be sitting for your finals. In 2 months time from today, you will be busy wearing your graduation suit and gown. And in 3 months time from now, I won’t be seeing you around here in Volgograd anymore.
Damn time really flies! I could still remember the times where I bumped into some of you, let it be in the groceries stores, by the streets, in hospitals, main building and even during sending laundry. At that time I would say, see ya! It was so easy to say at that time, taking granted that there are still plenty of chances where I would meet you and say the same thing again. Now, this is no more the same case.
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
Don't be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends.
As we say goodbye, we remind ourselves that farewells are not forever, nor are they the end. They are simply words to say that we will miss you dearly and that we will remember you fondly.
Although we may be separated by time and distance in the interim, nothing will diminish the important role that all of you have and always will play in our lives.
I love the simple word hello
It always rings a joyful bell
But one of the saddest words I know
is the oft times tearful word farewell.
With this poem, I will end this farewell speech by wishing you happy adventures, fantastic, amazing experiences and the journey of a lifetime as doctors.

By,
Lee Jiann Woei

Installation and Farewell

Dear MCSC members,

Please note that the appreciation, installation and farewell event will start at 4pm sharp without any delay due to the fact that the mama and the guard on duty during that day of event will be the nasty ones, we would expect the event to end before 8 pm. They would give us unnecessary problems if we overuse the hall.

Do note that since the bomb attack which took place here yesterday, the university has ordered the hostels administrators not to allow any guest into the hostel at all. So for those coming from apartments and kim hostel, bear in mind that you would not be able to enter the hostel as guest at anytime of the day, you are only allowed to be in the aktovi zal throughout the event.

Please understand that the organizing committee and team will face a lot of predicted circumstances.

So members, we need your cooperation to keep this event on time and successful. Thus, please be in the aktovi zal at 3.30pm so that everything could start off smoothly.

Thank you for your understanding. Looking forward to see you during the event.

P.S : dress code is formal (theme: black & white)

Yours sincerely,
Lee Jiann Woei
(event manager)

Letter of Appreciation from CNY Project Manager

To All MCSC members

Firstly, I would like to forward my warmest thankfulness to CNY committee members as well as MCSC members who actively involved themselves in preparing this CNY celebration. It took months and weeks to prepare, but it ended in few hours. Frankly speaking, I really had a great time with you all.

I clearly know that many members had sacrificed their energy and personal time in organizing this celebration. Therefore, what MCSC can do is to prepare the 1st session with the principle of “Members Welfare is Our Priority” and “To Reunite all Malaysian Chinese under 1 community” for all members.

In the 1st session, there are some specialties which we specially prepared for members, they are:

1. 步步高升齐捞生 (Prosperity Toss)

2. 新春大团拜 – Red packets and Mandarins

3. Malaysia CNY Fund Raising Prizes Giving- Top 10 + 10 extras

4. Lucky Draw- 20 prizes + 3 Hampers

5. Food Menu- General Menu + Oat Chicken

However, due to late starting of the 1st session, we have to cancel新春大团拜. As I promise, the Red Packet will be distributed to MCSC members via Batch Representative as appreciation to all members.

Thank you for your contribution and commitment in making this CNY celebration a success.

Unity Makes Strength, 团结就是力量

Thank You.
